OLYMPIA, WA--March 26, 2013--For the second year in a row, a Washington State Department of Revenue official has won a national award for excellence in leadership.
The Washington D.C.-based Federation of Tax Administrators named Janet Shimabukuro, assistant director of Revenue’s Taxpayer Services Division, recipient of its 2013 Harley T. Duncan Award for Leadership and Service. Revenue’s Deputy Director Vikki Smith received this award last year.
FTA judges cited Shimabukuro’s “rapid rise through the ranks,” her leadership in various initiatives such as destination-based sales tax and state-issued reseller permits, and her advocacy for clear communication and the improvement of business services. Also noted by the FTA was Janet’s “willingness to share her lessons learned and knowledge with other states, both through participation in FTA workshops and by volunteering to travel to other tax agencies to provide training.”
“We are extremely proud of Janet,” said Revenue Director Carol K. Nelson. “Her work within this agency has been exemplary. We are pleased that the Federation chose to recognize her work with this award.”
The FTA is an association of tax and revenue departments of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City. Its mission is to improve the standards and methods of tax administration.
