Department of Revenue Director Elected President of National Tax Organization

Olympia, Wash., June 5, 2009 — Department of Revenue Director Cindi Holmstrom was elected president of the Federation of Tax Administrators (FTA) at its annual meeting in Denver this week.

The FTA is a nonprofit association of taxation and revenue departments of the 50 states, District of Columbia, New York City and Puerto Rico. Its mission is to improve the standards and methods of tax administration.

Washington has been a key player in working with the FTA on national tax issues, including Congressional proposals affecting the states.  It also has been active in sharing its innovations in tax administration with other states, and soliciting their ideas for efficiencies, cost-savings, and effective compliance techniques.

“I’m honored by this opportunity to work with other states improve the fairness and efficacy of tax administration,” Holmstrom said.  “Washington has benefited immensely by its association with the FTA, and I expect that to continue into the future.”

As president, Holmstrom will head an 18-member board of trustees during the 12 months.  While the FTA is based in Washington, D.C., Holmstrom will be able to conduct virtually all her work through teleconferences from her office in Olympia.  An executive director runs the daily operations.
