What is the estate tax?

The estate tax is a tax on the value of estates of people living in Washington at the time of their death, or non-residents who own property in Washington State.


Estate Tax forms, rules and information are specific to the date of death.

>>  Deaths on or before May 16, 2005

>>  Deaths on or after May 17, 2005


Information on Hemphill Decision:

Thurston County Superior Court authorized the Department to issue final refunds to class action members. Final refunds were mailed in December 2005.


In addition, the Thurston County Superior Court authorized the Department to issue refunds to non-class action members. Refunds to non-class action members were mailed in July 2005.


In a separate mailing, the estate's representatives were sent a letter and worksheet showing the Department's calculation of tax and interest refunded.
