When is my annual tax return due?

January 31, 2013, is the due date for your Annual 2012 Excise Tax return.


Can I file and pay my taxes online?

Yes! Register for E-file and you can file and pay your taxes online. You can even file a "No Business Activity" return. To register for E-file you'll need your UBI number and Preassigned Access Code (PAC).


What if my business had no activity this year?

  • Report no business activity electronically. Simply log on to My Account. You will need your tax registration number and pre-assigned access code (PAC) - printed on your tax return or your new business letter - to sign up.
  • If your business had no activity for the year, you may call our 24-hour automated attendant to file a "No Business Tax Return." Simply dial (800) 647-7706 and follow these prompts (please have your Department of Revenue Tax Registration Number ready):
    1. Press 1 for touch tone phone.
    2. At the action prompt, press 1 to file a no business tax return
    3. Enter your UBI/Tax Registration Number
    4. Press 1 to confirm your UBI/Tax Registration Number
    5. After the disclaimer, press 1 to continue
    6. Enter your filing frequency (press 3 for annual)
    7. Enter four digits for the year (2012)
    8. Enter a contact phone number (in case we have questions and need to call you)
    9. Listen to the recap, and press 1 to confirm
    10. You will receive a 9-digit confirmation number. Press 9 to repeat, # to return to the main menu, or simply hang up
  • You can also check the "No Business Activity" box that's located on your return and mail it to us using the self-addressed envelope.


What if my business closed this year?

To close your Department of Revenue account, you can do one of the following:

  • Check the appropriate box on your tax return, and mail it back to us.
  • Close your account via telephone using the following steps:
1. Call (800) 647-7706.
2. After the greeting is played, press "1" for touchtone callers or say "voice" for voice recognition.
3. Press "1" - Yes, you are a registered business.
4. Enter your 9 digit UBI/registration number plus the # key.
5. You will be asked to verify the number.
6. Press "2" to report an address change or to close your account.
7. Press "2" to close your account.
8. You will be asked a series of questions regarding your account closure.

  • Write to us for a binding tax ruling, if you have a tax-related question specific to your business.

Tip:

To avoid long waits on the phone:
 
  • Call early in the month, before January 15.
  • Have your Department of Revenue tax registration number and tax return available. Your tax registration number is a nine-digit number that is printed on the tax return, above the name and address label.
  • Know the type of tax return you've received - a Combined Excise Tax Return, Retailing & Other Activities Return, or a Business & Occupation Activities Tax Return.
  • Have your gross income figures available to complete the return. (Remember, gross income should not include sales tax collected.)
  • Stay on the line and be patient - we answer every call in the order received.
