Q:
We are in the process of selling our home and should be receiving our property tax statement shortly. Should we pay a prorated property tax amount since we will not be in this home for the entire tax year?
A:
Typically, the escrow company handling your real estate transaction will prorate property taxes between the buyer and seller on the closing agreement. Since the Department of Revenue does not maintain individual property tax records, your property tax payments should be made to the county treasurer's office where the property is located.
