What is the estate tax?

The estate tax is a tax on the value of estates of people living in Washington at the time of their death, or non-residents who own property in Washington State.


Estate Tax forms, rules and information are specific to the date of death.

Filing requirements

Either the Washington estate tax return and estate tax payment or a request for an extension to file the Washington estate tax return and an estimated payment are due nine months after the decedent’s date of death. Estate tax changes (coming soon)

The Department will incorporate recently passed legislation EHB 2075 (Chapter 2, Laws of 2013). Efforts will include rule making (Chapter 458-57 WAC) and form updates prior to the affected filing periods.
