AT A GLANCE

Statewide property tax levies due in 2000 grew by 6.5 percent, compared with 7.6 percent last year, to $5,411.5 million, according to data provided by county assessors. Values grew by 7.8 percent compared to 6.9 percent last year. Rates fell to a statewide average of $13.39 per $1,000.

SCHOOLS

School levies, the major component of all levies collected, maintained existing levels of financing in 2000 with 5.9 percent growth. The school levy share of all levies fell from 56.7 percent in 1999 to 56.4 percent in 2000. The state levy totaled $1,325.5 million, increasing 3.7 percent from 1999, while local levies were $1,726.9 million, a 7.7 percent increase from 1999. In 2000 the state property tax levy represented 43.4 percent of the total school levies, while local voter-approved excess levies (maintenance and operation, capital projects, transportation vehicle and bonds) comprised 56.6 percent.

COUNTIES

Counties expanded their regular and special levies 5.3 percent, down from an increase of 5.9 percent due in 1999. County levies, including county general, road levies and special levies, amounted to $972.4 million. Counties have maintained at least an 18 percent share of all property tax levies since 1988 (18.0 percent in 2000, down slightly from 18.2 percent in 1999 and 18.5 percent in 1998).

CITIES AND TOWNS

Cities and towns showed an increase over 1999 levies of 10.25 percent to $734.3 million. Cities and towns have maintained at least an 11 percent share of all property tax levies since 1980 (13.6 percent in 2000, up slightly from the 13.1 percent share in 1999).

JUNIOR TAXING DISTRICTS

Junior taxing district levies amounted to $652.5 million, a 6.9 percent increase. The share of all levies devoted to junior taxing districts was 12.1 percent in 2000 compared to 12 percent in 1999.
