Feb. 1 is National Unclaimed Property Day!

OLYMPIA, WASH. – Jan. 31, 2025 – Feb. 1 is National Unclaimed Property (UCP) Day and the perfect opportunity to find out if you, your friends, or your family have unclaimed property waiting to be claimed.

"This is your money — we want to get it back into your pocket," Governor Bob Ferguson said. "We need to make Washington more affordable. One of my priorities is getting your money back to you."

The Washington State Department of Revenue (Revenue) is partnering with the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) for this annual event to raise awareness of unclaimed property nationwide and encourage people to search for and claim their lost money.

"The chance that you or someone you know has unclaimed property is 1 in 7," said Treasurer Carmen Pigler, District of Columbia and President of The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA). “Much better odds than winning the lottery!"

Washington’s Unclaimed Property Program is a free public service administered by Revenue that helps people recover lost or forgotten money or property. If a business or organization can’t reach the owner of certain assets for an extended period, those assets are considered lost, forgotten, or abandoned and handed over to the state’s UCP Program. UCP then works to reconnect the rightful owners or their heirs with their lost money or property.

The state currently holds $2.4 billion in uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, forgotten deposits, and other property for Washington residents and businesses.

“In fiscal year 2024 alone, our UCP team returned a record-breaking $154 million to its rightful owners,” shared Liz Black, Revenue’s UCP Administrator. Over the last five years we’ve doubled the money returned and are still growing.”

In addition, the department received $365 million in unclaimed property, up $43 million from $322 million the prior year, another all-time high.

An easier way to claim your cash

Revenue continues to strive for ways to make it easier for Washingtonians to reunite with their unclaimed property. The Money Match Program, launched in 2023, automatically returns unclaimed property to Washingtonians after verifying ownership without requiring an owner to file a claim or submit documentation. In fiscal year 2024, the program sent out 42,198 checks totaling $6 million.

To check whether you have unclaimed property, visit Washington’s unclaimed property website, claimyourcash.org. If your name or the name of your business or organization comes up, you will be directed on how to begin the claim process.

The Department of Revenue is Washington state’s primary tax agency, nationally recognized as a trusted leader in tax administration and customer service. Revenue administers nearly 60 categories of taxes that help fund vital public services. It also oversees programs that return money to the public, including the Working Families Tax Credit and Unclaimed Property.
