Income tax

Washington does not currently have an individual income tax.  

Beginning Jan. 1, 2028, a new 9.9% income tax will apply to individuals and married couples filing jointly with annual adjusted gross income exceeding $1 million. The first return will be due in 2029.

The 2026 Washington State Legislature established this tax through Senate Bill 6346.  

Important dates

  • The new income tax takes effect Jan. 1, 2028.
  • The first returns for the new tax will be due in April 2029.

Who may be affected

The new tax applies to individuals and married couples filing jointly with annual adjusted gross income exceeding $1 million.
