X-ray Facility and Devices

Any businesses that have a facility with any of the x-ray tube types listed below, including dental or medical offices, hospitals, and veterinary, educational, security, research, industrial, or correctional facilities is required to have an X-ray Facility and Devices endorsement.

X-ray facility

Radiation Machine Facility Registration - $195

A Department of Health x-ray facility endorsement is required for business locations that have a facility with various x-ray tube types, including dental or medical offices; hospitals; and veterinary, educational, security, research, industrial, or correctional facilities.

X-ray tube types

Podiatry – Educational

Any podiatric tube intended for teaching proper position and technique that WILL NOT be used on humans. This tube type can also be selected for medical examiners or coroners.

Podiatry – Fluoroscopic

Any fluoroscopic x-ray machine that is used only in the process of determining diagnoses or treatment for to the foot, ankle, or lower leg.

Podiatry – Handheld

An x-ray machine that can be held by the operator in one or two hands which produces images.

Podiatry – Radiographic

Any x-ray machine that produces a 2D image of the lower leg anatomy. Typically, in a fixed location where the x-ray tube has hemispherical movement to obtain Anterior-Posterior and Lateral images.

Security – Back Scatter

A type of x-ray machine that relies on detecting Compton scatter radiation from a targeted area to create an image. These are typically used for detection of inorganic material (including weapons or contraband) near the surface of the human skin.

Security – Baggage Scanner

An enclosed x-ray machine that is fully self-shielded and has two openings with drapes and a conveyer belt running through. Typically used for scanning bags coming in or out of a restricted area or for foreign entity detection in food products.

A non-diagnostic full body x-ray machine that is used in correctional facilities on incarcerated individuals.

Security – Bomb Squad

A portable x-ray machine with portable image receptors that is specifically designed to image suspicious packages/bags that have the potential to contain a bomb.

Therapy – Accelerator (Linear)

Any device that aims a beam of x-ray radiation at a cancerous tumor with pinpoint accuracy. In these devices, electrons are accelerated in a straight line, hence the term “linear.”
